Head North

New territories were to be discovered again today and this time we covered a sanctuary dedicated to St. Francis, the small hilltown of Poppi and ventured a little further north for some real Tuscan countryside.

La Verna is a sanctuary dedicated to St. Francis (a living and working Monastery) and sits on top a cliff with sweeping views for miles.

We arrived and followed the signs that pointed us to the information centre, however when we got inside there was only a little bar (cafe) but no information about the place. We took it upon ourselves and started wondering.

That is a pile of snow and ice in the corner.

It was such an amazing place with large places for worship and then very small ones that would only seat a few.

There were also some outdoor places for worship under rock overhangs and in a cave too.

It took us a while to get to La Verna and the road was very windy, but it was well worth the drive.

La Verna, Katie was standing on top of the cliff, below the building on the left.
Next stop was the small hilltop town of Poppi where we also went for a very nice lunch at Ristorante Albergo across the piazza from Castello dei Conti Guidi.

For Katie, lunch was Spelt Soup followed by Spinach and ricotta ravioli and I had Ribollita soup and followed with a Tortellini style pasta, both our pasta was sauced with butter and sage.

After lunch, we noticed while walking the (few) streets of Poppi, that every church we saw was either having or had scheduled a funeral for today. I also noticed many of these signs, I think Poppi has a problem.

"The dogs have no fault, the master's yes".

I was able to fit in a brief flight with the drone and here is the video below

Finally, we drove further into the hills to see some real Tuscan country, this final part of today's journey took us up to the town of Stia.

Here I was able to fly the drone again and view the Tuscan countryside from above.

A typical Tuscan home

And a short video flying into the valley of the Stia region.

and that is another lovely day in Tuscany.
